Chapter 4

The smell of the forest seeped into Adam’s senses, and he took a deep breath, inhaling the sweet scent of ice and berries from the very delectable woman by his side. He wrapped an arm around Bay’s shoulders, and she snuggled deep, making his wolf howl to be let out so he could play.

They stood in their backyard, rather than in the circle with the rest of the Pack. He knew it was stupid, but he’d rather change in front of Bay alone than meet the others to do it. His family seemed to understand, even if he knew they wished it were different.

He had issues getting his prosthesis off and changing, so he usually had to kneel awkwardly to shift into his wolf. It didn’t bother him as much as it had, but he wasn’t quite ready to show off his stump to the Pack.

“Are you ready for the hunt?” Bay asked as she ran a hand up and down her arm.

Their wolves were riding each of them hard as the moon pulled at their bodies. They’d have to change quickly so they got some relief from the ache. Usually they could deal with the moon and not change, but it had been too long for either of them.

“Past ready,” he grunted.

Bay threw her head back and laughed. “Is it bad that I’m really happy that the non-wolves are taking care of all the kids tonight?”

Although, as werewolves, they didn’t have to go on the hunt when the moon called, lately in the wake of the war with the Centrals, they’d decided to let their wolves run free. The tension and loss rode their wolves hard, and they needed this. In contrast, though the witches and humans, and demons in Josh’s case, liked going on hunts with them, there were too many young children around who needed to be watched.

Soon those kids would grow up and shift on their own, but for now Hannah, Josh, Larissa—their friend and another witch like Hannah—and a few other mates would be in the town center with the children who couldn’t shift yet.

“No,” he finally answered. “It’s not bad at all. We need to let our wolves roam and, at the same time, know our son is safe and warm. Eventually he’ll shift and hunt with us.”

Bay’s face brightened, her green eyes going wide. “Oh, he’s going to be such a cute little pup. I can’t wait to see what color his fur is when he shifts.”

Though the color of wolves’ fur didn’t always match their hair color, it was subtly hereditary. Micah wouldn’t be a white-coated pup because neither he nor Bay was, but Micah could be anything else.

“He’s already the best baby there ever could be,” Adam said, echoing his statement from before.

Bay rolled her eyes and pulled back from him. “What did I say about spoiling him?”

Adam tilted his head. “Do it often?”

His mate snorted and proceeded to strip out of her clothing so they could shift. Adam’s gaze landed on her full breasts and her rose-colored nipples that seemed to be begging for his touch.
